Foreign languages

Three tests are offered for foreign language; French, German, and Spanish. Each test measures language mechanics and reading comprehension for the specified language and are validated for use with non-native speakers of the language. Students have sixty minutes to complete the exam, which consists of approximately 50-60 items. For all three exams, a separate score for language mechanics and for reading comprehension are provided, as is an overall composite score. Composite score reliability coefficients for all three exams are above .90.

Most importantly, the tests work! We have found that students who enroll in the course recommended by our foreign language exams earn an average GPA that is 0.33 - 0.50 better than do students who enroll in a course above the recommended placement. We have found that correctly enrolled students drop less frequently, continue in the discipline longer, and report higher course satisfaction.
